The Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) Sustainable Development and Finance Working Group, in partnership with International Balkan University (IBU), is pleased to announce the international symposium "The Role of Economic and Financial Integration in Sustainable Development", to be held on 27–28 November 2026 in Skopje, North Macedonia. The symposium is the fifth in a series of events the Working Group has organised since 2021, and the first to take place outside Türkiye.

Having explored sustainability from the circular economy to family businesses, the series now turns to the level of relations between economies, examining economic and financial integration in a comparative framework covering the Western Balkans and Türkiye.

THEMES

We invite papers under the following six themes: 1. Financial integration, capital markets and development finance 2. Trade integration, regional value chains and the common regional market 3. Sustainable finance architecture: taxonomies, reporting and transition finance 4. Carbon pricing, border adjustment and the green transition 5. Payment systems integration, financial inclusion, remittances and human capital 6. Institutions, governance and measurement

PROGRAMME - Day one (27 November) will feature the opening ceremony and invited sessions. - Papers selected through the call will be presented in parallel sessions on 28 November. - Each presentation is allotted 15 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of discussion. - Presentations will be delivered in person. In exceptional cases, online presentation may be permitted at the discretion of the Organising Committee.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS - An extended abstract in English of 500–800 words, covering the research question, data and methodology, main or expected findings, and policy implications - 4–6 keywords, JEL codes (if applicable), affiliation and contact details - A short biography of no more than 150 words for each author

IMPORTANT DATES - Abstract submission deadline: 10 November 2026 - Notification of acceptance: 15 November 2026 - Confirmation of participation and registration: 17 November 2026 - Symposium: 27–28 November 2026 - Full paper submission: 31 January 2027 (6,000–9,000 words)

PUBLICATION AND SUPPORT Peer-reviewed full papers will be published as an edited book by TÜBA Publications. Participation is free of charge. The working language of the symposium is English.
